Empresaria y filántropa estadounidense. Fue la primera mujer millonaria afroamericana. Era una lavandera viuda con una hija que mantener cuando en 1905 desarrolló un método para alisar el cabello rizado. Fundó la empresa Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Co. para vender su tratamiento, y sus vendedoras puerta a puerta se convirtieron en figuras familiares en las comunidades negras de EE.UU. y el Caribe. En 1910 trasladó su empresa a Indianapolis, Ind. Incrementó sus ganancias con hábiles inversiones en bienes raíces. Donó dos tercios de su fortuna a instituciones benéficas y educacionales. Los salones de su hija, A'Lelia Walker Kennedy, se convirtieron en el lugar de encuentro de artistas y figuras del mundo de la cultura durante el renacimiento de Harlem.
